One of the most recognisable names in Australian sport is returning to the scene of its most famous victory this Easter with the Hockeyroos – the Australian women’s hockey team play China in three matches at Sydney Olympic Park.
Fifteen years ago the Hockeyroos clinched Olympic gold at the same venue and the Hockeyroos v China International Challenge 2015 represents the start of the team’s preparations to reach the Olympic Games in Rio next year.
With three games over Easter weekend local families can enjoy plenty of fun-filled opportunities to see the world’s top international hockey stars up close.
Madonna Blyth, captain of the Hockeyroos, said, “The girls are excited to come to Sydney and to play in front of a home crowd. So much of our preparation for big tournaments like the Olympic Games and World Cups takes place overseas so to have a series like this here is pretty special.
“It would be great to rekindle some of the spirit of Sydney 2000. This is a new generation of Hockeyroos aiming for big things at Rio 2016 but many of us were inspired by that team and its success. Now it’s our turn to inspire the youngsters of New South Wales and Australia.”
The series will be hosted in Sydney after the NSW Government successfully attracted it as part of its commitment to securing international sporting events for NSW.
The Hockeyroos are rated as the second best team in the world after winning the Commonwealth Games and clinching silver medals at the World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2014. China sit just behind Australia in fifth place in the world rankings.
